Situated on the southern slope of the Hill of Carmona, the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Aparecida is situated over the Neiva valley and dominates the landscape in the north of the municipality of Barcelos. This sanctuary was built in the place where the Virgin appeared in 1702. According to the tradition, João, a "dumb and simple" pastor, witnessed the appearance of the Virgin and he was cured from the deafness. His father promoted the construction of a small hermitage over the cliffs where the Virgin appeared, thanking the miracle. The place began to be a place of devotion to pilgrims who came from all parts of Minho. Through its 150 meters high, you can admire the view across the Neiva valley. From this place you can see the small farms the Neiva River that walks towards the Atlantic.
