Rock art engravings of Penedo das Pombas

Tabuaço
Description
The rock art engravings do Cabeço das Pombas, carved on granite rock, are found in the parish of Pinheiros and are an important artistic-religious expression apparently from the Bronze Age, although its exact symbolism is unknown. They are believed to be associated with a ceremonial cult.

The first phase of the engraving is said to be from the Bronze Age, 2nd millennium B.C. The symbolic motifs of this sanctuary are not very common in the northeast of the peninsula.

A representation of a branch is found at the centre of the panel, containing a face engraved at a later period; on the right of this figure, and to the back there is a series of figures that may relate to a ceremony. Other elements include furcula, tongs and an arch, which may represent a container, and a figure composed of ten lines that seem to represent flames. To the right of this ensemble is also an engraving with the letters “IPRM” and a figure with twelve arms.
