The Museum was named D. Diogo de Sousa to honor the 16th century Archbishop who undertook important measures to improve urban planning in Braga D. Diogo de Sousa has also developed a remarkble work gathering Braga´s archaeological finds. The D. Diogo de Sousa Museum collaborates in research projects, conservation and promotion of the region´s archaeological sites and collections.
The Museum was built in Braga´s most significant and best preserved archaeological area. Due to the progressive integration and recognition of the archaeological ruins in the historic centre, it is now possible to link the museum - through a culutral route - with other important roman sites.
The museum collections have two main distinct origins: ancient finds, mostly epigrahic pieces gathered since the 16th century, and recent finds discovered during archaeological excavations that became part of the museum since 1980.
