WAY OF SAINT JAMES - PORTUGUESE COASTAL WAY

Póvoa de Varzim
Description
Póvoa de Varzim is located between the Ave and Cávado rivers, which was a mandatory passageway for pilgrims searching for Saint James’ tomb. This fact was proven by multiple churches and chapels that had images or the invocation of this Saint.
All the way from Porto, the two main pilgrimage paths go through Póvoa de Varzim:
The Coastal Way, a magnificent view near the sea, ending up in Esposende;
The Central Way, coming from Vila do Conde, goes through S. Pedro de Rates, where the first portuguese hostel was settled, until it reaches Barcelos.
